3 Konga staff docked over N9.6m phone theft


Three staff of an online retail outlet, Konga, on Friday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing 500 units of Infinix Hot2 mobile phone valued at N9.6 million.

The men, Ibrahim Maradesa; 31, Oluwatoyin Salau; 41, and Jerry Idenudia; 27, who all reside at Ogba area of Lagos, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 4, at about 6:00p.m., at No. 36, Cocoa Road, Ogba, Lagos.

Unuigbe alleged that the accused stole 500 units of Infinix Hot2 16 GB12 valued at N9.6 million, property of Konga online retailer.

According to him, the accused, who are drivers with the company, diverted a truck loaded with the items to an undisclosed destination.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Section 285 provides three years imprisonment for stealing.

Ruling on the bail application, the Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, admitted the accused to bail of N500, 000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

He said the sureties must reside in Lagos and must be gainfully employed.

The magistrate adjourned the case till Feb. 17, 2016 for substantive trial.

Bayelsa rescheduled poll to hold January 9

Yenagoa—The rescheduled governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State  and in some units in the seven other local government areas of the state will now hold on January 9.

Vanguard gathered that the new date was agreed upon at a stakeholders meeting held in Abuja, yesterday.

The meeting, it was learned, resolved that police should play a leading role in the rescheduled poll as against the military dominance during the botched December 6 election in the area.

Also, the distribution of electoral materials is to be decentralized as against the previous practice that provided windows for electoral fraud and violence, which resulted in the alleged death of some persons.

The meeting, which had in attendance, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, Prof  Mahmood Yakubu, the National Security Adviser, NSA, Major-General Babagana Monguno (retd), the governorship candidates of all the contending political parties and other stakeholders, according to a source privy to it,  deliberated extensively on the incident that led to the cancellation of the election in the affected areas and proffered solutions.

Fresh Trouble For MTN As FG Files Criminal Charges Against It

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has filed criminal charges against MTN Nigeria Communication and its Chief Executive Officer, Ferdi Moolman, over alleged copyright infringement.

The charge, with number ABJ/CR/379/2015, filed in the Federal High Court, Abuja, was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

In the two-count-charge signed by NCC Prosecutor and Copyright Inspector, Marypauline Olere-Luma, MTN and Moolman were alleged to have infringed on copies of the musical work of an Abuja based musician, Dovie Omenuwoma-Eniwo (aka Baba 2010).

 

Specifically, the defendants were alleged to have "distributed, sold or let for hire or for the purposes of trade or business, expose or offer for sale 3009 infringing copies of the musical work" of Baba 2010.

The musical works allegedly infringed upon by the defendants included 'Omotena, Gentleman, Christian and unity song’ by the musician.

The offences, according to the charge, are contrary to and punishable under Section 20 (2)(a) and 20 (2)(b) of the Copyright Act, Cap C28 Laws of the Federation 2004.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the case.
