Nine Persons Die In Delta Auto Crash

ABOUT 12 persons were feared dead yesterday in a ghastly multiple auto crash at Asaba, Delta State when a Mercedes Benz truck laden with cement rammed into a Mitsubishi mini bus and a refuse collection vehicle near the airport along the Benin-Asaba expressway.

The Mercedes Benz truck marked ASB 831 ZH was said to be heading towards the market town of Onitsha, Anambra State at top speed when it rammed into the vehicles that were driving against traffic due to the long line of vehicles waiting to buy fuel at the NNPC Mega Station on the opposite side.

An eyewitness account said that the Mitsubishi bus somersaulted several times because of the impact of the contact with the truck and was later trapped under the same truck. The mini bus and the refuse collection vehicles burst into flames immediately before rescue efforts could come.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene and were making frantic efforts to rescue the victims just as nine burnt bodies including five men and officials of the commission took four females who were retrieved from the ill-fated vehicles to the mortuary at the Federal Medical Centre, Aaba.

The driver of the cement-laden truck was said to have fled immediately the accident happened, while that of the refuse collection truck and an unidentified passenger who both sustained serious injuries were rushed to the FMC, for treatment.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Delta State, Mr. Rindom Kumven attributed the accident to route and speed violation.
